This year, for our yearly vacation, we decided to go to Martinsville. I won't tell you eveything about our vacation because that would A) Be boring and B) It's not all race related. So hey, let's get to the racing. The drive to the track was fine but of course we got close to the track at about 9AM. We waiting in traffic for about 45 minutes and then got to the parking lot on the east end of the track. We were about 1/2 mile away and since it rained the night before the folks there were only letting 4X4 trucks in that parking area. When I pulled up they tried to "discourage" me from parking but I explained I had AWD and when I marched my happy ass around the trucks that were slipping and sliding all was well. We walked to the track and walked around to the trailers first. We did get to see Denny Hamlin's mother, who was working his trailer. She was very nice and spent time with some of the fans. We didn't talk to her because we had to go on the track. Since we had fan walk tickets we ended up on the track and found out right away we could use a Sharpie to write on the walls and start/finish line. Naturally, we wrote all kinds of stuff for our drivers. Goeff Bodine was there, standing next to the #5 City Chevrolet he won Hendricks first race in. Very cool and Mr. Bodine was a class act. We got our photo taken with him and he gave us autographs. The next best thing about fan walk was we got to walk right up to the inside wall and take some great photos of the cars and pit crews. Then it was off to our seats. We sat in Turn 4 way at the top. From there we could see the whole track and straight down the front stretch. The view was awesome. Slide over to the aisle and down the stairs and what does my stomach find? Martinsville Hotdogs. What can I say about this concoction of tube meat? Hot dog, chili, mustard and cole slaw. Well, I didn't say much but I ate four of them. BTW, they were only $2 a piece. Beer was awesome with them too. Yummy!!! Once the race was done (Johnson won BTW) we walked to our cars and started tailgaiting. Security as awesome and didn't bother us. It took about 2 hours for other traffic to leave and we packed up and left with no traffic problems. There was almost no crowd here and it appeared the stands were about 2/3 full. If you need some short track action next year at a great price, try Martinsville. Denfinately a diamond in the ruff. |
